The Ones Who Stay

Written by William Kapadia

Summary

The Ones Who Stay follows Noah, a talented high school football player with a promising future, who becomes drawn to Ava, the chronically ill girl living across from him whom he first notices through their bedroom windows. What begins as nightly conversations through handwritten notes and phone calls turns into a deep emotional bond, as Ava—confined by a severe lung disease—and Noah—burdened by expectations—find comfort and meaning in each other. As their relationship grows, Noah becomes increasingly conflicted between his football career and his devotion to Ava, especially as her condition worsens. When Ava’s life is put in immediate danger and she needs a rare lung transplant, Noah ultimately chooses to sacrifice his future in football by volunteering as a donor, proving his love and commitment to “stay” when it matters most.
